Accessibility Tools Available in Zapp

Introduction

The the European Accessibility Act (EAA) aims to make digital products more accessible for people with disabilities across the EU.

The directive was adopted in 2019, with a compliance deadline set for 28 June 2025.

It applies to mobile apps, TV apps, and websites.

Note: Compliance is the legal responsibility of the app owner. You must read the requirements, make the necessary updates to your app or site, and complete a self-declaration of conformity.

Accessibility Standards and Tools

Building accessible apps ensures a better experience for everyone. Our platform includes a wide range of tools to help you meet accessibility standards across mobile, TV, and web platforms.

Content and UI Accessibility

Ensure your app’s content is clear, flexible, and inclusive:

Subtitles and captions for video and audio — provided through the HLS/Dash manifest.

Text alternatives for images, icons, and other visuals - come from the data source, while some UI elements use labels from the localization section. These are read aloud by the OS screen reader, so make sure they clearly describe the visual content.

High-contrast design (minimum 4.5:1 on mobile, 7:1 on TV) — while the operating system may offer support features, they don’t replace the need for accessible design. Background colors can be configured using the theme plugin or screen settings in Zapp, while text label colors are managed via cell styles.

Large touch targets (≥ 44x44 dp/pt) — configurable via cell styles or plugin settings, depending on the UI elements used. All our plugins and presets are designed with correctly sized default icons, such as for favorites or download. We recommend using the action menu feature when you have multiple actions. It simplifies the UI and makes tapping easier.

Localized content and accessibility support — achieved using the localization tools available in each screen, plugin, or in the content itself.

Clear focus indicators and logical navigation order — ensure users can track their interaction path easily, especially with keyboards or remotes.

Make important content understandable without relying solely on color.

OS-Level Accessibility Support

We support assistive technologies and input methods provided by the operating system. Such as:

  • Adjustable text size

  • High-contrast design (minimum 4.5:1 on mobile, 7:1 on TV)

  • Screen Readers - ensure all interactive UI elements are properly labeled using the localization section in Zapp and all content using the accessibility extension. Click here for more details.

Third-Party Integration (Web Only)

For web, we offer integration with UserWay — a third-party service that helps monitor, improve, and maintain accessibility.

Note: Integration requires a separate UserWay subscription.

Final Thought: Design With Your Audience in Mind

Accessibility isn’t just about meeting a legal requirement — it’s about creating better experiences for real people. Users with visual, motor, hearing, or cognitive challenges depend on accessible design to fully engage with your content.

With our platform, you can take it a step further and build custom layouts tailored specifically for accessibility audiences — making your app not only compliant, but truly inclusive.
